Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the 6.4-kilometer-long Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Accompanied by Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the inauguration marks a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development. This achievement holds a strategic, economic and regional significance.
An Engineering Marvel in the Himalayas
Known as Sonamarg Tunnel, the Z-Morh Tunnel has been constructed at a cost of ₹2,700 crore on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. Connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg, the tunnel ensures year-round access to Sonamarg and facilitates summer travel to Ladakh. This state-of-the-art infrastructure is part of the ambitious Zojila Tunnel Project, aimed at creating uninterrupted connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, regions critical for strategic and economic reasons.
The project was overseen by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Initiated in May 2015, the tunnel’s completion in 2024 has been hailed as a transformative achievement, reflecting India’s prowess in advanced engineering and infrastructure development.
Strategic and Economic Importance
Located at an altitude of over 8,650 feet, the Z-Morh Tunnel is designed to withstand the region’s harsh climatic conditions. It provides seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, ensuring safe and reliable access to the strategically vital Ladakh region. By significantly reducing travel time and improving accessibility, the tunnel is expected to enhance nation’s security and facilitate smoother movement of goods and services.
Analysts believe this initiative will boost the local economy by enhancing trade and tourism. Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination, and Ladakh, known for its breathtaking beauty and strategic significance, are anticipated to witness a surge in tourist arrivals and economic activities. Experts predict that it will generate new job opportunities, uplift small businesses, and significantly contribute to the comprehensive development of both regions.
Part of a Broader Vision
The Z-Morh Tunnel is an integral part of the Zojila Tunnel Project, which aims to provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, overcoming challenges posed by heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions in the winter. Together, these tunnels are set to revolutionize transportation and communication, strengthening its integration with the rest of the country.
According to the press release issued by PIB, the Zojila tunnel, scheduled to be completed by 2028, will reduce the route length from 49 km to 43 km and increase the speed of vehicles from 30 km/h to 70 km/h, ensuring seamless NH-1 connectivity between Srinagar valley and Ladakh. This enhanced connectivity will boost defence logistics; promote economic development and socio-cultural integration in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
A Path to Prosperity
Prime Minister Modi, while addressing a gathering on the occasion, stated that the vision of a developed India will be fulfilled when its crown, Kashmir, is adorned with the jewels of progress. Prime Minister Modi expressed his aspiration to make Kashmir more beautiful and prosperous. He appreciated the continued support from the youth, elders and children of the region in this direction. He emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are working hard to realize their dreams and are making significant contributions to the progress of the region and the country. Lieutenant Governor Jammu & Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Union Ministers of State Dr. Jitendra Singh and Ajay Tamta among other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
By bridging the gap between remote regions and urban centers, the Z-Morh Tunnel stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive development. It not only enhances connectivity but also paves the way for economic growth, regional stability, and improved quality of life for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
With this landmark project, India reaffirms its focus on building robust infrastructure that connects its diverse regions while fostering unity and progress. The Z-Morh Tunnel is not just a passage through mountains; it is a gateway to prosperity and a symbol of engineering excellence.
