Omar Government Gets Lease of Life!

Negating all claims made by political Pundits and exit polls conducted by various news channels, the polling results in all the five states that underwent elections have sprung surprise. Not only in UP where the polling results had the potential to make great impact on the stability of the Union Government that has just razor thin majority susceptible of falling with just few MPs changing sides, the results in Punjab have also surprised people where a record of changing the government after every election has been broken ever since the Punjab was divided in three splinter states—Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. By retaining power for the second consecutive term, the SAD—BJP combine indeed has christened a new chapter in the political history of Punjab! The Congress headed UPA is an amalgam of about a dozen small parties a fact that makes the UPA leadership a crippled authority compelling it to bear with all the nonsense of its coalition partners how small they may be. Though Mulayam’s SP (23 seats) and Maya’s BSP(21 seats) in the Lok Sabha have not been part of the UPA, they have been supporting the UPA government on various issues in the Parliament. This time however, the wave and the political predictions revealed that the largest party in UP could become dependent on Congress to form the State Government thereby compelling it to become part of the UPA. Rahul, certainly did not shed his sweat in the lanes of UP for winning few seats for his party just to play second fiddle! But this did not happen and what actually happened has upset the Congress arithmetic. By getting absolute majority Mulayam may become all the more unbridled and he instead of joining UPA, would prefer to dictate terms the way Mamta has been doing even while being part of the UPA. Had the results in UP polls gone on expected lines, these could have cast shadows of danger on the National Conference-Congress Government in Jammu and Kashmir also, a situation which even NC leadership may not have visualized. The coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir of late has been facing a struggle for existence like situation. There is unrest prevailing everywhere. Hardly a day passes when people do not come on the streets complaining about irregular power & water supply, bungling in transfers& appointments, and rampant corruption in offices. Even action against the Chief Minister for looting the Central funds on his blue eyed boys by paying them salary and perks at par with other Ministers of State flouting all financial codes and constitutional norms has become a vociferous public demand. Not only are the general public, even the government employees, the students and daily wagers are on the roads demanding justice. Consequently, like his father’s estranged brother in law, Glushah who was called as ‘Curfew CM’, the incumbent CM has earned the infamous reputation of being a ‘Protest Chief Minister’! This apart, the state of Jammu and Kashmir happens to be a border state experiencing trouble in its neighborhood. The brewing unrest and constitutional crisis and explosive situation prevailing in Pakistan can adversely affect the fragile situation existing here as well. State’s susceptibility to unrest becomes all the more high when the local administration has totally paralyzed, a situation no Government at the Centre can afford. The state government in true meanings of the word is a complete failure and everybody seems fed-up of it wanting this dispensation to go. Even the Congress leadership at the national level is fed up of the prevailing situation in the State, but it cannot take action against this government courtesy coalition compulsion and weak strength of UPA at the Centre. National Conference is part of UPA and aware of the fact that if just one MP ( Saif-ud-Din Soz) could help topple the Vajpayee government, the Congress high command cannot afford to ignore the significance of three NC MPs. The NC under stands this weakness of Congress and has thus been trying to run the government according to its whims and fancies thereby creating undesirable situation for its coalition partner. But had Mulayam Singh become dependent on Congress while forming the local government, the National Conference lead government in Jammu and Kashmir would have started counting its days which would certainly have become numbered. Jammu and Kashmir at this point of chaos needs strong administrative set-up and luckily, it has capable popular and strong leaders like Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad who have a track record of effective administrative experience to their credit. But the existing situation at the Centre may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Omar and a common man in the State may be compelled to bear the burden of his administrative dead body for some time more. This Government indeed has gained a lease of life, but how long this time alone will tell.
